The real cost of ignoring mobile-first design

Every audit we run turns up some version of this. Nobody bills you for neglecting mobile-first design. The cost shows up somewhere else.

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Where the cost lands

  • Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
  • Enquiries that quietly never arrive
  • More than half of most sites' traffic arrives on a phone
  • Rework, once the problem is finally visible

Starting narrow forces you to decide what actually matters. There is a version of this that is over-engineered, and it is worth avoiding. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.

What to do next

Desktop layouts are easier to add than to strip back. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.

How to tell if yours is fine

The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Three things worth confirming about mobile-first design before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • More than half of most sites' traffic arrives on a phone — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
