Your returns policy, explained without the jargon

There is no clever trick in this one, just a handful of decisions worth making deliberately. Here is your returns policy without the vocabulary that usually surrounds it.

In e-commerce every friction point has a price attached, and the arithmetic is unusually easy to check. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

The short version

A clear policy increases conversion more than it costs in returns. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.

Why people complicate it

Most of the confusion comes from tooling rather than from the idea itself. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets.

Hiding it does not reduce returns, only trust. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Anything you cannot measure here, you are deciding by taste, which is fine as long as everyone knows it.

Making it stick

Link it from the product page, not just the footer. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

In practice

Trust does most of the selling online, and trust is built from unglamorous details. Three things worth confirming about your returns policy before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Link it from the product page, not just the footer — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

None of this needs a rewrite. Most of it is a morning's work once someone decides to do it.
