Getting started with training your team

It comes up on almost every project, usually later than it should. A short on-ramp to training your team for teams who have not touched it before.

Clear scope protects the client at least as much as it protects the agency. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

The reason this keeps coming up

A tool nobody can use is not a tool. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

Your first week

  1. Find out what is already in place
  2. Record the walkthrough so new staff can catch up
  3. Change one thing and measure it

Training beats documentation people never open. In practice this is a scheduling problem more than a technical one. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

In practice

Strategy work is mostly deciding what not to do, and writing it down so it stays decided. Three things worth confirming about training your team before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Training beats documentation people never open — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
