The real cost of ignoring multi-currency selling

The version of this that works is simpler than the version most people imagine. Nobody bills you for neglecting multi-currency selling. The cost shows up somewhere else.

Trust does most of the selling online, and trust is built from unglamorous details. It rarely shows up as a line item, which is exactly why it slips.

Where the cost lands

  • Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
  • Enquiries that quietly never arrive
  • Showing local prices lifts conversion in export markets
  • Rework, once the problem is finally visible

Rounding to sensible local prices matters more than exact conversion. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

A reasonable first step

Be explicit about which currency is charged. The reasoning matters more than the rule, because the rule has exceptions. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.

In practice

In e-commerce every friction point has a price attached, and the arithmetic is unusually easy to check. Three things worth confirming about multi-currency selling before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Rounding to sensible local prices matters more than exact conversion — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

None of this needs a rewrite. Most of it is a morning's work once someone decides to do it.
