Three myths about featured snippets

The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. A few things about featured snippets that get repeated more often than they get checked.

Search engines are trying to answer a question, so the pages that answer questions clearly tend to do well. The teams that stay on top of it are the ones who put it on a calendar rather than a wish list.

“It only matters for big sites”

Direct answers near the top of a page get pulled into results. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

“We can deal with it after launch”

Sometimes true, usually expensive. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped.

“Our platform handles it”

Winning the snippet can outperform the top blue link. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

How to tell if yours is fine

Search work compounds slowly, which is why it gets abandoned about two months before it would have paid off. Three things worth confirming about featured snippets before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Winning the snippet can outperform the top blue link — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

Most of the value here comes from doing the first two things, not all of them.
