When keyword research is worth the effort

The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. Keyword research is not free, and pretending otherwise leads to bad decisions.

Search engines are trying to answer a question, so the pages that answer questions clearly tend to do well. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.

When it is worth it

Search volume matters less than matching intent. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. The teams that stay on top of it are the ones who put it on a calendar rather than a wish list.

When it is not

If nothing downstream depends on it and nobody is complaining, it can wait. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it.

How to decide

Look at what already ranks before writing anything. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.

What this looks like day to day

Technical fixes remove obstacles; content earns the position. Both are needed and they are not interchangeable. Three things worth confirming about keyword research before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Long, specific phrases convert better than broad ones — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
