Above-the-fold content: the questions we get asked most
The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. The questions about above-the-fold content that come up most often on our calls.
Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.
Do we need to care about this?
Visitors decide in seconds whether to keep scrolling. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.
Can it wait until after launch?
Occasionally. More often the post-launch version costs several times the pre-launch one. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it.
How do we know it is working?
The fold is a range, not a line, so do not cram. It is worth being explicit about, because assumptions differ quietly. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.
How to tell if yours is fine
The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Three things worth confirming about above-the-fold content before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Say what you do before you say how special you are — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
