Getting started with brand consistency
The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. A short on-ramp to brand consistency for teams who have not touched it before.
Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.
The reason this keeps coming up
Consistency is what makes a small company look established. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.
Your first week
- Find out what is already in place
- Document the rules or they drift within a quarter
- Change one thing and measure it
Consistency is not sameness, it is predictability. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.
What this looks like day to day
Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Three things worth confirming about brand consistency before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Document the rules or they drift within a quarter — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
