Before you invest in wireframing

This is cheap to get right at the start and expensive to retrofit. Before you spend anything on wireframing, it is worth confirming a few things are already true.

The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.

Prerequisites

  • You can describe the outcome you want in one sentence
  • Someone owns it after the work is done
  • Wireframes settle structure before anyone argues about colour
  • You have a way to tell whether it worked

The mistakes we see most

Low fidelity keeps feedback focused on flow. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

An hour of wireframing saves a week of redesign. The reasoning matters more than the rule, because the rule has exceptions. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

In practice

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Three things worth confirming about wireframing before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Low fidelity keeps feedback focused on flow — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If you are not sure where your systems currently stand on this, it takes us about an hour to find out.
