Signs it is time to revisit white space

We end up explaining this on discovery calls often enough that it deserved writing down. A few signals that white space is due some attention.

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Check it against what you would want a competitor's site to get wrong.

The signals

• Nobody can say when it was last reviewed
• The answer depends on who you ask
• Space is what makes a dense page feel calm
• Grouping related elements matters more than adding padding everywhere

Where to start

Cramped layouts read as cheap even when the design is good. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

What this looks like day to day

The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Three things worth confirming about white space before you move on:

• Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
• Cramped layouts read as cheap even when the design is good — and you know whether that is true here
• There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

Most of the value here comes from doing the first two things, not all of them.
