Before you invest in URL structure

Every audit we run turns up some version of this. Before you spend anything on URL structure, it is worth confirming a few things are already true.

Technical fixes remove obstacles; content earns the position. Both are needed and they are not interchangeable. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.

Prerequisites

  • You can describe the outcome you want in one sentence
  • Someone owns it after the work is done
  • Short, readable URLs get shared and clicked more
  • You have a way to tell whether it worked

What to watch for

Changing them later costs you rankings unless you redirect. This is the sort of thing that compounds, quietly, in both directions. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

Words beat numeric IDs for both people and crawlers. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

In practice

Search work compounds slowly, which is why it gets abandoned about two months before it would have paid off. Three things worth confirming about URL structure before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Words beat numeric IDs for both people and crawlers — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

None of this needs a rewrite. Most of it is a morning's work once someone decides to do it.
