A short guide to upsells and cross-sells

It is rarely the thing that gets a project approved, and often the thing that decides how it goes. Everything we would tell a client about upsells and cross-sells in the time it takes to drink a coffee.

Small percentage changes matter here because they apply to every order, every month. Anything you cannot measure here, you are deciding by taste, which is fine as long as everyone knows it.

What is actually at stake

Relevance beats volume every time. This is the sort of thing that compounds, quietly, in both directions. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.

The practical version

The confirmation page is an underused place to suggest more. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Where it usually goes wrong

Aggressive upsells at checkout increase abandonment. The reasoning matters more than the rule, because the rule has exceptions. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

What this looks like day to day

Trust does most of the selling online, and trust is built from unglamorous details. Three things worth confirming about upsells and cross-sells before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Aggressive upsells at checkout increase abandonment — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
