Three myths about training your team

Teams tend to reach for this after something has already gone wrong. A few things about training your team that get repeated more often than they get checked.

Clear scope protects the client at least as much as it protects the agency. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

“It only matters for big sites”

A tool nobody can use is not a tool. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

“We can deal with it after launch”

Sometimes true, usually expensive. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets.

“Our platform handles it”

Training beats documentation people never open. The cost of getting this wrong is rarely visible on the day it happens. The teams that stay on top of it are the ones who put it on a calendar rather than a wish list.

In practice

The projects that go badly are rarely the ones with the hardest technical problems. Three things worth confirming about training your team before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Training beats documentation people never open — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
