Three myths about tax calculation

It is rarely the thing that gets a project approved, and often the thing that decides how it goes. A few things about tax calculation that get repeated more often than they get checked.

In e-commerce every friction point has a price attached, and the arithmetic is unusually easy to check. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.

“It only matters for big sites”

Rules differ by destination and change without warning. It is worth being explicit about, because assumptions differ quietly. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

“We can deal with it after launch”

Sometimes true, usually expensive. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets.

“Our platform handles it”

Automate it rather than maintaining tables by hand. There is a version of this that is over-engineered, and it is worth avoiding. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.

The short version

Small percentage changes matter here because they apply to every order, every month. Three things worth confirming about tax calculation before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Getting it wrong is a compliance problem, not just an accounting one — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
