Before you invest in SEO audits

The advice here is unglamorous, which is probably why it gets skipped. Before you spend anything on SEO audits, it is worth confirming a few things are already true.

Technical fixes remove obstacles; content earns the position. Both are needed and they are not interchangeable. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Prerequisites

  • You can describe the outcome you want in one sentence
  • Someone owns it after the work is done
  • An audit is only useful if it ends in a prioritised list
  • You have a way to tell whether it worked

The mistakes we see most

Fix crawlability before chasing keywords. The reasoning matters more than the rule, because the rule has exceptions. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.

Most sites have a handful of issues doing most of the damage. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. The teams that stay on top of it are the ones who put it on a calendar rather than a wish list.

The short version

Search work compounds slowly, which is why it gets abandoned about two months before it would have paid off. Three things worth confirming about SEO audits before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • An audit is only useful if it ends in a prioritised list — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
