The real cost of ignoring on-site product search
There is no clever trick in this one, just a handful of decisions worth making deliberately. Nobody bills you for neglecting on-site product search. The cost shows up somewhere else.
Trust does most of the selling online, and trust is built from unglamorous details. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.
Where the cost lands
- Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
- Enquiries that quietly never arrive
- People who use search convert at a much higher rate
- Rework, once the problem is finally visible
Handle typos and synonyms or they leave empty-handed. The cost of getting this wrong is rarely visible on the day it happens. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.
A reasonable first step
Log zero-result searches, they are a product roadmap. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.
The short version
Small percentage changes matter here because they apply to every order, every month. Three things worth confirming about on-site product search before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- People who use search convert at a much higher rate — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
