Getting started with product photography

There is no clever trick in this one, just a handful of decisions worth making deliberately. A short on-ramp to product photography for teams who have not touched it before.

Trust does most of the selling online, and trust is built from unglamorous details. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.

What is actually at stake

Consistent lighting and background make a catalogue look professional. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.

Your first week

  1. Find out what is already in place
  2. Scale shots prevent returns from size surprises
  3. Change one thing and measure it

One excellent photo beats six mediocre angles. In practice this is a scheduling problem more than a technical one. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.

The short version

Small percentage changes matter here because they apply to every order, every month. Three things worth confirming about product photography before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Scale shots prevent returns from size surprises — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
