Product descriptions, explained without the jargon

Every audit we run turns up some version of this. Here is product descriptions without the vocabulary that usually surrounds it.

Content is the part of a project most likely to be underestimated and most likely to delay a launch. It rarely shows up as a line item, which is exactly why it slips.

The short version

Lead with the benefit, support with the specification. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

Why people complicate it

Most of the confusion comes from tooling rather than from the idea itself. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets.

Manufacturer copy is duplicate content. There is a version of this that is over-engineered, and it is worth avoiding. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Where to go from here

Answer the question that stops the purchase. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

In practice

Pages that answer a real question outlive pages written to fill a slot in a sitemap. Three things worth confirming about product descriptions before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Lead with the benefit, support with the specification — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
