When pricing page design is worth the effort

It comes up on almost every project, usually later than it should. Pricing page design is not free, and pretending otherwise leads to bad decisions.

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Check it against what you would want a competitor's site to get wrong.

When it is worth it

Hiding prices costs you more enquiries than it protects. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

When it is not

If nothing downstream depends on it and nobody is complaining, it can wait. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not.

How to decide

Say what happens after someone picks a plan. There is a version of this that is over-engineered, and it is worth avoiding. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

In practice

The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Three things worth confirming about pricing page design before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Say what happens after someone picks a plan — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
