Signs it is time to revisit onboarding flows

Most teams know this matters. Fewer have decided who owns it. A few signals that onboarding flows is due some attention.

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.

The signals

  • Nobody can say when it was last reviewed
  • The answer depends on who you ask
  • Every extra step before value loses people
  • Ask for information when you need it, not up front

How to approach it

Show progress so the end feels reachable. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.

What this looks like day to day

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Three things worth confirming about onboarding flows before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Every extra step before value loses people — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
