Getting started with onboarding flows

This is one of those topics that looks small until it costs you something. A short on-ramp to onboarding flows for teams who have not touched it before.

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

Why it matters

Every extra step before value loses people. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.

Your first week

  1. Find out what is already in place
  2. Ask for information when you need it, not up front
  3. Change one thing and measure it

Show progress so the end feels reachable. It is worth being explicit about, because assumptions differ quietly. The teams that stay on top of it are the ones who put it on a calendar rather than a wish list.

The short version

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Three things worth confirming about onboarding flows before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Show progress so the end feels reachable — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

Most of the value here comes from doing the first two things, not all of them.
