Before you invest in cumulative layout shift

This is one of those topics that looks small until it costs you something. Before you spend anything on cumulative layout shift, it is worth confirming a few things are already true.

Performance work is mostly subtraction, which makes it unpopular and effective. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.

Prerequisites

  • You can describe the outcome you want in one sentence
  • Someone owns it after the work is done
  • Content jumping around is one of the most irritating experiences
  • You have a way to tell whether it worked

The mistakes we see most

Set explicit dimensions on images and embeds. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

Late-loading banners are a common cause. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.

The short version

Real-world numbers from actual visitors matter more than a score produced on a fast laptop. Three things worth confirming about cumulative layout shift before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Late-loading banners are a common cause — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

The point is not perfection, it is knowing which of these you have consciously chosen to skip.
