What to ask your agency about choosing imagery

It is rarely the thing that gets a project approved, and often the thing that decides how it goes. If you are briefing an agency or a freelancer on choosing imagery, these questions are worth asking early.

The measurable part of design is whether people can find what they came for and act on it without hesitating. Check it against what you would want a competitor's site to get wrong.

Questions worth asking

  • Who will actually do this work, and have they done it before?
  • How will we know afterwards whether it worked?
  • What happens if it needs changing in a year?
  • What are you assuming that we have not confirmed?

What a good answer sounds like

Generic stock photography actively lowers trust. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.

Every image should earn the bytes it costs. The cost of getting this wrong is rarely visible on the day it happens. Check it against what you would want a competitor's site to get wrong.

The short version

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Three things worth confirming about choosing imagery before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Every image should earn the bytes it costs — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

Most of the value here comes from doing the first two things, not all of them.
