The real cost of ignoring heatmaps
The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. Nobody bills you for neglecting heatmaps. The cost shows up somewhere else.
More dashboards rarely produce more decisions. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.
Where the cost lands
- Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
- Enquiries that quietly never arrive
- They show where attention goes, not why
- Rework, once the problem is finally visible
Best used to generate hypotheses. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.
Turning this into a decision
Combine with recordings for context. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.
What this looks like day to day
Measurement is only useful when someone has agreed in advance what they would do differently. Three things worth confirming about heatmaps before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- They show where attention goes, not why — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
