Why analytics setup matters more than it looks

The version of this that works is simpler than the version most people imagine. Analytics setup is easy to treat as a detail, and that is exactly why it is worth a few minutes of attention.

More dashboards rarely produce more decisions. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

The reason this keeps coming up

Data you do not trust is worse than none. In practice this is a scheduling problem more than a technical one. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.

Filter internal traffic from day one. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

Where it usually goes wrong

Decide what you will act on before you track it. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Anything you cannot measure here, you are deciding by taste, which is fine as long as everyone knows it.

In practice

Measurement is only useful when someone has agreed in advance what they would do differently. Three things worth confirming about analytics setup before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Data you do not trust is worse than none — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
