Signs it is time to revisit form design

It comes up on almost every project, usually later than it should. A few signals that form design is due some attention.

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.

The signals

  • Nobody can say when it was last reviewed
  • The answer depends on who you ask
  • Every field you remove increases completion
  • Labels above fields survive small screens better than placeholders

How to approach it

Explain why you need anything that feels personal. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.

The short version

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Three things worth confirming about form design before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Every field you remove increases completion — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
