Domain management: the questions we get asked most
The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. The questions about domain management that come up most often on our calls.
The cheapest security work is the boring kind done on a schedule. If two people in the business would answer this differently, that gap is the actual problem.
Do we need to care about this?
An expired domain is a self-inflicted outage. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.
Can it wait until after launch?
Occasionally. More often the post-launch version costs several times the pre-launch one. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped.
How do we know it is working?
Registrar access deserves the strongest protection you have. It is worth being explicit about, because assumptions differ quietly. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.
What this looks like day to day
Security is a maintenance habit rather than a purchase, which is why it drifts. Three things worth confirming about domain management before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Auto-renew and keep the contact address current — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
