The real cost of ignoring discovery workshops

The gap between knowing this and actually doing it is where most teams lose ground. Nobody bills you for neglecting discovery workshops. The cost shows up somewhere else.

Strategy work is mostly deciding what not to do, and writing it down so it stays decided. Write the reasoning down alongside the decision, because the reasoning is what changes first.

Where the cost lands

  • Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
  • Enquiries that quietly never arrive
  • A few focused hours prevents months of wrong direction
  • Rework, once the problem is finally visible

Get the decision-makers in the room, not just their proxies. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. The failure mode is not doing it wrong, it is doing it once and assuming it stays done.

A reasonable first step

End with written decisions, not a mood board. Where this goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.

The short version

Clear scope protects the client at least as much as it protects the agency. Three things worth confirming about discovery workshops before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Get the decision-makers in the room, not just their proxies — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If you want a second opinion on how yours is set up, ask.
