Three myths about competitor analysis
This is one of those topics that looks small until it costs you something. A few things about competitor analysis that get repeated more often than they get checked.
Strategy work is mostly deciding what not to do, and writing it down so it stays decided. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.
“It only matters for big sites”
Look for the gaps, not just for what to copy. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.
“We can deal with it after launch”
Sometimes true, usually expensive. The reasoning matters more than the rule, because the rule has exceptions.
“Our platform handles it”
Check what they rank for that you do not. In practice this is a scheduling problem more than a technical one. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.
What this looks like day to day
The projects that go badly are rarely the ones with the hardest technical problems. Three things worth confirming about competitor analysis before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Their weaknesses are your positioning — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
Worth checking on your own setup before it becomes someone else's problem to fix.
