The real cost of ignoring choosing an agency
We end up explaining this on discovery calls often enough that it deserved writing down. Nobody bills you for neglecting choosing an agency. The cost shows up somewhere else.
Strategy work is mostly deciding what not to do, and writing it down so it stays decided. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.
Where the cost lands
- Time spent on work that should not have been necessary
- Enquiries that quietly never arrive
- Ask who will actually do the work
- Rework, once the problem is finally visible
Look at sites they built two years ago, not just last month. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. Doing this properly once is usually cheaper than doing it approximately three times.
Making it stick
References matter more than the pitch deck. Getting it slightly wrong is survivable. Ignoring it entirely is not. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.
The short version
Clear scope protects the client at least as much as it protects the agency. Three things worth confirming about choosing an agency before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Look at sites they built two years ago, not just last month — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
Worth checking on your own setup before it becomes someone else's problem to fix.
