Brand consistency: what to get right first

This is one of those topics that looks small until it costs you something. If you only fix one thing about brand consistency this quarter, make it the first item below.

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Most teams find the first pass takes an afternoon and the maintenance takes minutes a month.

Start here

Consistency is what makes a small company look established. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

Then this

Document the rules or they drift within a quarter. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Eventually

Consistency is not sameness, it is predictability. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. It rarely shows up as a line item, which is exactly why it slips.

In practice

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Three things worth confirming about brand consistency before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Document the rules or they drift within a quarter — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

Most of the value here comes from doing the first two things, not all of them.
