Before you invest in brand consistency

It is rarely the thing that gets a project approved, and often the thing that decides how it goes. Before you spend anything on brand consistency, it is worth confirming a few things are already true.

Consistency is the quiet half of design work: it rarely gets complimented, and its absence is noticed immediately. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.

Prerequisites

  • You can describe the outcome you want in one sentence
  • Someone owns it after the work is done
  • Consistency is what makes a small company look established
  • You have a way to tell whether it worked

Warning signs

Document the rules or they drift within a quarter. There is a version of this that is over-engineered, and it is worth avoiding. The version that survives contact with a real deadline is the simple one.

Consistency is not sameness, it is predictability. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. If it only works because one person remembers to do something, it does not work yet.

What this looks like day to day

Design decisions are the ones clients feel most confident arguing about, which makes it worth separating taste from evidence early. Three things worth confirming about brand consistency before you move on:

  • Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
  • Consistency is not sameness, it is predictability — and you know whether that is true here
  • There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped

If any of that sounds like a description of your current setup, it is fixable.
