When bounce rate is worth the effort
Every audit we run turns up some version of this. Bounce rate is not free, and pretending otherwise leads to bad decisions.
More dashboards rarely produce more decisions. It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than inheriting whatever the last person set up.
When it is worth it
A high bounce rate is not automatically bad. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. It rarely shows up as a line item, which is exactly why it slips.
When it is not
If nothing downstream depends on it and nobody is complaining, it can wait. It is worth being explicit about, because assumptions differ quietly.
How to decide
Engagement time is usually the better signal. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.
The short version
Measurement is only useful when someone has agreed in advance what they would do differently. Three things worth confirming about bounce rate before you move on:
- Someone can say what the current setup is without going to look
- Context and page type change what it means — and you know whether that is true here
- There is a way to tell whether the last change to this helped
