Password policies: a practical guide
Most teams know this matters. Fewer have decided who owns it. This guide covers what password policies actually involves, where it usually goes wrong, and how to tell whether yours is in reasonable shape.
The cheapest security work is the boring kind done on a schedule. Nothing below assumes a large team or a large budget — most of it is a decision somebody has to make and then write down.
Why this earns attention
Length beats complexity rules. The teams that handle this well are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. Assume whoever inherits this will have half your context and none of your patience.
For most businesses the question is not whether this matters but how much of it is worth doing right now. That depends on what you are trying to achieve in the next few months, not on best practice in the abstract. None of that requires a large budget, only a decision and someone to own it.
What good looks like
Forced rotation makes passwords worse, not better. Small and consistent beats large and occasional here. Budget a little time for it every quarter and it never becomes a project of its own.
Security is a maintenance habit rather than a purchase, which is why it drifts. The version that works in practice is usually less elaborate than the version described in the guides.
Check credentials against known breach lists. That sounds obvious written down. It is still the thing most often skipped. It is the sort of thing that looks like polish right up until it costs you an enquiry.
